‘Kelly McCool reports from…’

I had fun with Kelly about this in Editing class, but it’s worth sharing with the other classes as well.

Kelly, a senior in the journalism track, got “above the fold” play on the Times Leader’s web site this week for her reports from “The Party of the Century.”

This is exactly the kind of experience journalism students should be shooting for during their four years at the university. Kelly is picking up “real world” skills and getting some great items for her portfolio. Beyond that, she’s working across media — handling video, online, for a newspaper. It’s hard to do better than that.

As I cannot say enough…

1) Do an internship your junior and senior year in college.

2) Work for the school newspaper or as a stringer for The Times-Tribune during your four years here.

That, much more than grades, helps you get that first job once you graduate.
