Now THAT is Hardball

If you haven’t seen it yet, you should watch Jon Stewart devour Chris Matthews in an interview on The Daily Show.

It’s unfortunate that one of the best, most hard-hitting interviews you will see on television this week — if not this month or even this year — appears on Comedy Central.

Stewart may have blindsided Matthews a bit, assuming the latter thought he was in for a Larry King-like softball interview to promote his new book (Matthews’ body language on entrance suggests that was not the case). But he gave Matthews ample opportunity to defend himself, and he didn’t shout over the answers.

This is a textbook example of an interviewer who asks tough questions and listens to the answers, but doesn’t let his subject sidestep out of the interview without really facing the concerns raised. And he does it all without losing his smile or seeming cruel or hateful.
