Req: N
As Monday’s deadline for Newswriting speech stories approaches, I’ve had a couple students e-mail me about their inability to find a speech. Undoubtedly, one or two others also have yet to cover a speech as well.
There were some outstanding speeches to cover last week, including a visit from one of the original writers for “The Simpsons” and another by the Emmy winning Web producer for “The Office.” At this point, the options left are somewhat limited. There are some great speeches available, but most involve a little driving.
Glancing online at the local entertainment newspapers:
Friday, 1:30 – A Forum on Women and Philanthropy, Misericordia University, Dallas, PA (Price: $25, $35 with buffet lunch, $100 with lunch, dinner and ticket to “An Evening with Maya Angelou”).
Friday, 8 p.m. – Maya Angelou, Misericordia University, Dallas, PA (World-renowned author and an important figure in the Civil Rights Movement.)
Saturday, 4:30 p.m. – Matt Madden Lecture, Wilkes University, Wilkes-Barre, PA (New York City artist and graphic novelist presents a slide lecture of his work. See more at http://www.mattmadden.com/)
Sunday, 9 a.m. – Zen Meditation Gathering, Stillwater, PA (With Zazen instruction, walking, a talk by Genro Sensei and tea. Vegetarian snack offerings welcome. Wear loose clothing.)
Sunday, 1:45 p.m. – Family Gallery Tour: The Man Behind the Museum, Evehart Museum, Scranton, PA
Remember, as I said in class, it’s hard to write a quality speech article without a quality speech to cover. So choose wisely. (The Angelou, Madden and Everhart lectures are all potentially good stories for The Aquinas.)
