All-Spanish radio station debuts in NEPA

On the heels of the University of Scranton’s success with Spanish language radio, a Carbondale-based radio station has switched to an all-Spanish programming format, according to the Citizen’s Voice:

Carbondale-based WCDL-AM has been renamed Caliente (Hot) 1440 and recently adopted all Spanish-language programming, including a daily local broadcast from 7 to 10 a.m.

“It’s the first all-Hispanic radio station in the market,” said Bill Brennan, sales manager for Route 81 Radio, which is based in West Chester and operates Caliente 1440, WNAK-AM in Nanticoke, WAZL-AM in Hazleton and Lite 94.3, WLNP-FM.

The change is a response to the region’s surge in Latino population, which is exhibiting more economic clout and drawing more attention from regional businesses.
